The following guidelines are provided to enable your organization to best accommodate GreenOrbit within your environment:

Software Architecture

  • Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5
  • Microsoft Internet Information Services (built in component to Windows Server)
  • Microsoft SMTP Virtual Server or equivalent SMTP mailer
  • Internet Access (direct or via web proxy) for external RSS Feeds

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017 or Microsoft SQL Server 2016 or 2017 Express or greater
  • For full-text searching of documents, appropriate iFilters are required Please review the Search iFilters page for further information

View our guide that contains in-depth instructions on preparing your server to run GreenOrbit

Database Options

GreenOrbit (GO) uses Microsoft SQL Server to run the back end databases of the GO system. An GO installation has 3 databases:

  • GreenOrbit: This primary database stores metadata information

  • GreenOrbit-FileStore: This database provides storage for all uploaded files and images that are stored in a binary format (please also see the GO Filestore Options page for further information about binary file storage)

  • GreenOrbit-Search: This database contains the search index

Microsoft SQL 2012, 2014, 2016 Server Configuration

Using the full version of SQL 2012, 2014, 2016 or 2017 allows for the highest level of performance and capacity as well as load balancing. We recommend using SQL Server for organizations or groups with more than 1,000 staff or where SQL Server is already available.

Microsoft SQL Server 2016, 2017 Express Configuration

Using SQL Server 2014 Express allows for the installation of GreenOrbit where no SQL Server is available. SQL Server 2016 or 2017 Express is the free lightweight version of the full Microsoft SQL Server 2016 or 2017 Server product and therefore has some limitations placed on it. For a user base of greater than 500 end users, we recommend you use the full Microsoft SQL Server version. SQL Server 2016 or 2017 Express must be downloaded and installed separately prior to the installation of GreenOrbit.

Additional SQL Server Configuration Information

Case insensitive collation setGO requires that the default collation set of the SQL Server instance is case insensitive (e.g. the default Latin1_General_CI_AS)
Mixed mode authenticationGO requires that the SQL Server instance is running in mixed authentication mode (Windows and SQL Server) as iD uses an SQL Server account to connect to the database
CLR enabledThe SQL Server common language runtime (CLR) integration feature needs to be enabled in the SQL Server instance. Please read the following article for further information -

  • For installations with greater than 3,000 end users, please contact for a customized infrastructure review and recommendation.

GreenOrbit does not require any additional hardware options in order to function.

Note: these values are an indication of the amount of space required for a typical installation.

In general, an organization with up to 1,000 end users will be able to accommodation GreenOrbit with a single server and the Microsoft SQL Server database (if required). A separate SQL Server installation will provide a greater number of connections and a large database capacity. There is a choice between using the GO web server file system or the SQL Server database for content storage, this may affect your server requirements.

Network Requirements

GreenOrbit will run effectively on all TCP/IP enabled intranet networks or the internet where suitable bandwidth is available and network latency is minimized. The positioning of the GreenOrbit application and server within the organization is vital to the efficiency of the application. Situating the server in a centralized hosting area will provide optimal performance.

User Requirements

Administrators and users of GreenOrbit require browser access to the system. Browsers that can be used on the front end and admin include:

  • Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer 11
  • Firefox
  • Google Chrome
  • Safari

* PLEASE NOTE: While the vast majority of Admin functionality is compatible with this browser there are known display and functionality issues with a small number of applications. Survey Manager is currently not supported in the Admin with these browsers.

Edit in Office feature works with the following versions of Microsoft Office

  • MS Office 2010 with SP2
  • MS Office 2013
  • MS Office 2016
  • MS Office 2019 (recommended)
